Yes - and that's exactly the problem
A ruck is a walk, so it counts as steps. There is no separate category, no penalty, no bonus. Walk two miles with twenty pounds on your back and your iPhone will log roughly the same step count it would have logged for the same two miles empty-handed.
That sounds like good news until you think about what you're actually using the number for. If you ruck on Tuesday and take an easy stroll on Wednesday, and both come back as 6,400 steps, your step count has quietly told you those two days were equivalent. They were not. One of them was substantially harder work, and the metric you check every evening has no way to say so.
Your phone has no idea you were carrying anything
It helps to know what a step counter is actually doing. Does rucking actually burn two to three times the calories?
At the loads most people actually carry, no - not remotely. This is the single most repeated claim in rucking content and it does not survive contact with the measured research.
The most directly relevant study here was commissioned by the American Council on Exercise and run by Len Kravitz, PhD, and James J. McCormick, MS, at the University of New Mexico's Exercise Physiology Laboratory. Thirteen untrained women aged 18 to 55 walked on a treadmill at 2.5 mph across a range of inclines, wearing no vest, a vest weighing 10% of body mass, and a vest weighing 15% of body mass. On flat ground, the 15% vest produced a 12% increase in calories burned over walking unloaded. On a 5-10% incline, a 10% vest produced about 13% more calories.
Twelve percent. Not 200%. For a 170-pound person, a 15% load is roughly 25 pounds - a genuinely substantial pack - and it bought about a one-eighth increase in energy cost on level ground. The same study found something else worth knowing: at a 15% incline, going from a 10% vest up to a 15% vest produced no additional metabolic benefit at all. A 12% bump is still real. On an hour's walk it is a meaningful addition, and it compounds across a month. So why does every rucking site quote a bigger number?
Two reasons, and neither is quite dishonest.
The first is that most of the serious load-carriage research is military, and military loads are not recreational loads. The 2022 review by Faghy, Shei, Armstrong, White, and Lomax in Physiological Reports surveys a literature built on packs ranging from 8 kg all the way to 88 kg - roughly 18 to 194 pounds. Numbers pulled from the heavy end of that range describe a soldier on a forced march, not someone walking the neighbourhood with a weighted vest. The second is that most of the pages ranking for this question sell rucksacks, weighted vests, or plate carriers. That doesn't make their numbers fabricated, but it does explain which end of the research they reach for. What the load does that calories don't capture
Calorie burn is a narrow lens, and judging rucking by it alone undersells what carrying weight actually changes. How do you actually track a ruck on an iPhone or Apple Watch?
There is no rucking option in the Apple Watch workout list.
