Steps not updating

Stepzy reads Apple Health, so a wrong number almost always means Health is not handing data over rather than Stepzy miscounting. Work down this list in order - the first two fix the large majority of cases.

1. Check Health permissions

  1. Open Stepzy and tap the gear icon.
  2. Look at Authorization Status under HEALTH. Anything other than Authorized is your problem.
  3. Open the Health app, tap your profile picture, then Apps & Services, then Stepzy.
  4. Tap Turn On All.
  5. Return to Stepzy and pull down on the Today screen.

Step count is the one permission Stepzy cannot work without. Full detail in Connecting Stepzy to Apple Health.

2. Check Motion & Fitness

Your iPhone will not count steps at all if motion tracking is off. Open iOS Settings, tap Privacy & Security, then Motion & Fitness, and confirm Fitness Tracking is on. If it was off, Health has no data for the period it was off - that gap is permanent.

3. Compare against the Health app

Open Health, go to Browse, then Activity, then Steps. If Health shows the same number as Stepzy, Stepzy is correct and the problem is upstream - your phone was not with you, or the Watch has not synced. If Health shows more, continue below.

4. Force a refresh

  • Pull down on the Today screen.
  • Swipe Stepzy away in the app switcher and reopen it.
  • Check that Background App Refresh is on for Stepzy under iOS Settings, General, Background App Refresh.
  • Check that Low Power Mode is off - it throttles background updates across the system.

5. Check the date and time

A manually set clock or the wrong time zone will make today's window wrong and can make the count look stuck. In iOS Settings, go to General, then Date & Time, and turn on Set Automatically.

6. Restart, then reinstall

Restart your iPhone. If that does not help, delete Stepzy and reinstall it from the App Store. Your data lives in Apple Health, not in the app, so nothing is lost - you will need to grant Health permission again on first launch, and to restore your Pro purchase if you have one.

Still wrong?

Get in touch and mention what the Health app shows versus what Stepzy shows. That one comparison narrows the cause immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Stepzy show zero on a new iPhone?

Health permission is per-device, so a new phone needs it granted again. Also confirm your Health data restored from your backup or iCloud.

Does the simulator or an iPad count steps?

No. Step counting needs an iPhone's motion coprocessor or an Apple Watch. An iPad has no pedometer.

My widget is wrong but the app is right.

That is a different problem - see Widget blank or stuck.

Steps stopped counting mid-day.

Check Low Power Mode, Background App Refresh, and whether the phone was left somewhere. Steps taken away from your phone only register if you were wearing an Apple Watch.

Stepzy is free on the App Store, for iPhone and Apple Watch.
