3D route flyover
A static route map tells you where you went. The flyover flies the route with you, following your path across real terrain and buildings at ground level.
Starting a flyover
- Open the Workouts tab and tap an outdoor walk, run, hike or ride.
- Scroll to the Route section.
- Tap Play Route on the map.
The map goes full screen and a marker starts travelling your route with the camera following behind it.
Controls
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| 3D / 2D | Top right. Switches between the pitched chase camera and a flat top-down view. 3D is on by default |
| Play / pause | Stops and resumes the flight |
| Scrubber | Drag to jump to any point along the route |
| Speed pill | Cycles 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x and 2x. Playback starts at 0.5x |
| Pinch | Zooms the camera in and out |
A capsule above the controls tracks distance covered and percentage complete as the flight runs. Longer routes get a longer flight, so a marathon does not scroll past in the same few seconds as a lap of the park.
Which workouts qualify
The Route section, and therefore the flyover, appears only for outdoor running, walking, hiking and cycling workouts that have GPS route points recorded in Apple Health. Indoor sessions have no route to fly.
Free flyovers and Pro
Everyone gets two free flyovers. The map itself, the route line and the distance and elevation figures are always available - it is only the animated flight that is metered. Stepzy Pro makes it unlimited. Your remaining count is written under the map.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Play Route missing on my workout?
No GPS route was recorded. Indoor workouts never have one, and outdoor ones need location access on the device that tracked them.
Does the flyover use data?
It renders Apple Maps terrain and buildings, so it downloads map tiles like any map view. On a slow connection buildings may take a moment to fill in.
Can I save the flyover as a video?
There is no video export. You can share a workout as a still card instead - see Share cards.
