Distance, calories, heart rate and BMI
Under the weekly summary on the Today screen sits a two-by-two grid of health cards. Each one is a live figure for the selected day, and each opens a detail screen with charts and context.
Total Distance
Walking and running distance for the day, in kilometres or miles depending on your units setting. The card also reports floors climbed. The detail screen breaks the distance down further.
Distance is measured by iOS, not derived from a fixed stride, so it accounts for pace rather than assuming every step is the same length. If you want the arithmetic version, try the steps to miles calculator.
Total Calories
Active energy burned, as recorded by Apple Health. This is movement energy only - it excludes the baseline calories your body burns at rest. For a whole-day figure including that baseline, see the TDEE calculator.
Avg Heart Rate
The average of the day's heart rate readings, which in practice means readings from an Apple Watch or another connected monitor. Without one, the card reads No readings today. Per-workout heart rate is far more detailed - see Heart rate zones, Effort and Strain.
BMI
Body Mass Index, calculated from the height and weight in Apple Health. Until both are present the card shows Add height & weight. Tap it to open BMI Insights, which shows your standard range, a BMI trend chart over time, an explanation of what BMI does and does not measure, and a Log Weight sheet.
Weight logged here is saved into Apple Health, so it is available to every other app you use. See Units and body measurements, or run the numbers on the web with the BMI calculator.
BMI is a population-level screening tool. It does not distinguish muscle from fat and it is not a diagnosis. Stepzy's figures are for general wellness only - talk to a healthcare professional about anything medical.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my calorie number lower than another app's?
Most likely the other app is showing total daily energy, which adds your resting metabolic rate. Stepzy shows active energy only, exactly as Apple Health records it.
Why is my heart rate card empty?
No heart rate samples were written to Apple Health that day. Heart rate needs an Apple Watch or a paired monitor - an iPhone alone cannot measure it.
How do I update my weight?
Open the BMI card and use Log Weight, or use Body Measurements in Settings. Both write to Apple Health.
